Poker is a card game of chance, skill, and strategy. It has many variants, but all involve betting on a hand of five cards. Players may bluff in an attempt to deceive other players into believing they have a strong hand, and they can fold if their hand is weak. The highest hand is a royal flush, consisting of four matching cards of the same rank, and a straight is five consecutive cards of the same suit. Other common hands include three of a kind and two pair.

Before the first deal, one or more players must place forced bets, usually an ante and a blind bet (or both). The dealer shuffles the cards, then deals each player one card at a time, beginning with the person to their left. The cards are dealt face-up or face-down, depending on the variant of poker being played. During each betting interval, players can choose to call, raise, or fold.

Once a betting interval is over, players can discard their cards and draw replacements, if allowed by the rules of the game. Then, a showdown takes place and the player with the best Poker hand wins the pot.
